DENTON — UNT men's basketball head coach Ross Hodge has added Sean McClurg to his staff as its director of scouting, video and analytics.
McClurg joins the Mean Green after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Queens University the previous two seasons under head coach Grant Leonard. There McClurg helped lead the Royals into the DI era, posting an 18-win season in 2022-23 and earning victories over the likes of Marshall, High Point, FDU and eventual ASUN champion Kennesaw State. FDU would go on to win the Northeast Conference championship and upset Purdue in the NCAA Tournament later that season. Queens won at least one ASUN Tournament game in each of McClurg's two seasons in Charlotte.
Prior to Queens, McClurg was on staff at New Mexico State under head coach Chris Jans for four seasons beginning in 2018. Over those four years, NMSU went to the NCAA Tournament two times and won 25 or more games three times — the only time they didn't was during the 2020-21 season when they had 10 games canceled due to the COVID pandemic. In the 2022 NCAA Tournament, the Aggies upset fifth-seeded UConn in the first round, 70-63.
McClurg has also served on the staff at Louisiana Tech as a graduate assistant in 2017-18 and was a student manager at his alma mater Virginia Tech from 2013-17.
While with the Hokies, McClurg worked under head coach Buzz Williams as he rebuilt the program from a nine-win team during McClurg's freshman season to a back-to-back 20-win team in just three years and culminating in a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 during McClurg's senior season. It was the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 10 years. Additionally, Virginia Tech set the most ACC wins in school history (10) in back-to-back seasons and took down perennial AP Top 5 teams in Duke and Virginia. McClurg assisted in the development of All-Conference players Justin Robinson and Kerry Blackshear, and NBA players in Justin Bibbs, Ahmed Hill, and Justin Robinson. McClurg assisted the Hokies in recruiting while also developing player-specific training plans based on shot chart tendencies and player efficiency metrics.
The Wayne, New Jersey native earned a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech in Computational Modeling and Data Analytics.
The 2024-25 UNT men's basketball season starts Nov. 5 with a home game versus Evansville at 7 p.m. CT.
