BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — It was a tale of two halves Thursday night as the UNT soccer team drew 2-2 at UAB to conclude the regular season.
With the result, the Mean Green (7-5-6, 3-3-4) head into the American Athletic Conference Tournament next week as the seven seed and will face the second seeded South Florida Bulls on Monday at 12:30 p.m. CT in the first round of the tournament from Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
Thursday night against the Blazers, North Texas dominated the first 45 minutes of action and just eight minutes into the match opened the scoring with a goal from sophomore Mia Bernard. It was the first goal UAB had conceded at home all season.
Throughout the first half UNT put constant pressure on the Blazers (7-4-5, 4-2-4) backline and goalkeeper. As they controlled possession in the first half the Mean Green put eight shots on target and hit the post twice. However, Bernard's goal was all UNT could get on the scoreboard.
In the second half UAB controlled more of the possession than it did earlier and had some actual build ups that put North Texas into hairy positions.
UNT though capitalized on a corner kick in the 66th minute when senior Devyn Flannery scored her 16th career goal to give her side an insurance.
That cushion though didn't last long as UAB capitalized on a near free kick following a foul. The Blazers' Abbey Burns was not intending to score but her kick into the box from the spot took a unexpected bounce and caught UNT off guard as it skipped into the back of the net.
Burns then again made North Texas pay in the 84th minute after they tried to play out of the back and she intercepted an errant pass and scored with a rocket shot to the top left corner.
UNT over the last 10 seasons is now 103-3-8 (.945) in matches where they score two or more goals.
North Texas and USF's first round match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
