DALLAS - UNT women's golfer Malisone Chanthapanya will have a unique honor this week, as she is competing in the Southwest Showcase at Cedar Crest, which will be televised on the GOLF Channel.
The event runs Monday-Wednesday at Cedar Crest Golf Club and features 42 - 21 men and 21 women - of the country's best amateur golfers from diverse and underrepresented groups with a great cause and mission: making golf accessible and inspirational for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Chanthapanya, who is of Laotian descent, joined the Mean Green this year after a stellar career at Texas Wesleyan, where she was a three-time NAIA All-American. That followed a standout career at Saginaw High School in Fort Worth, where she participated in the First Tee Program, beginning at age 5. She was also named a "Rising Star" by the Lao American Sports Hall of Fame.
So far this season, Chanthapanya has played in three events for the Mean Green with a stroke average of 73 and has a season-low round of 69, at the Jim West Challenge. Her best finish came at the season-opening Powercat Classic in Manhattan, Kansas, where she tied for seventh.
The event will be broadcast on GOLF Channel from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, with a replay from 6:30-9:30 p.m.; 1:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a replay from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and another from 9:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.; and then Wednesday's final round will be broadcast from 1:30-4:30 p.m., with replays set for 5:30-8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.-1 a.m. (all times central).
