Women's Golf Hosts Sam Golden Invitational
9/7/2025 9:23:00 AM | Women's Golf
DENTON – The UNT women's golf team will tee off the 2025-26 season on Monday by hosting the 2025 Sam Golden Invitation at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth.
Thirteen schools from eight different conferences, including each of the power four leagues, will compete in this year's two-day invitational hosted by the Mean Green.
"Starting off the season hosting is a great advantage," said head coach Michael Akers. "We are honored to have Sam Golden's name on our event. Sam is a big supporter of our program, and we love his positivity."
North Texas has hosted the season opening invitational every other year since 2021. This is the second consecutive time it has been held at the Oakmont Country Club. In the most recent Sam Golden Invitational in 2023 the Mean Green finished in second place out of 12 teams while shooting 35-under par. In the 2023 Sam Golden UNT broke the program record for best opening round 18-hole score (278), best overall round 18-hole score (270) and best 54-hole total score (829), smashing the previous record by 11 shots. All program records that still hold.
"All of our qualifying rounds have been at Oakmont so we are getting multiple looks at the course and determining the best course set-up for the event," Akers said. "Mali (Chanthapanya) has looked very sharp in practice, which is great to see as she is our hardest worker. I'm happy that our entire team will play in the event to gain experience."
Active UNT junior Bouquet Subsomboon made her collegiate debut in the 2023 Sam Golden Invitational, shooting an 8-under par and finishing 10th overall. Fellow Mean Green junior Katharina Anglett also made her North Texas debut and shot a five-under par and finished in 19th.
This year's field features seven programs who finished last year ranked in the top 100.
Sam Golden is a 1974 UNT alum, earning his Bachelor of Business Administration and playing offensive line for the football team. Golden rose to be an executive at the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He later established Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) Financial Industry Advisory Services LLC, where he served as its CEO. In 2019 he was inducted into the UNT G Brint Ryan College of Business Hall of Fame. Golden's daughters Jaclyn Golden Malone ('06) and Janna Golden Reed ('11) also graduated from UNT and competed on the Mean Green women's golf team.
THE EVENT: Oakmont Country Club will play as a par-72 course at 6,343 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in the final round. A shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. CT on Monday and 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
THE FIELD: There are 13 teams participating: UNT, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Missouri, Louisville, Nebraska, Tulsa, Texas State, New Mexico State, UTSA, Middle Tennessee, Tulane and Central Arkansas.
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Clippd Scoreboard. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over in 2016. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for four NCAA Regionals in the last five years.
UP NEXT: Following the Sam Golden Invitational, the Mean Green will travel to Hutchinson, Kansas on Oct. 6 to compete in the OU Intercollegiate Presented by PDI.
FACILITY: Opened in 2021, the Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
