DENTON, Texas – UNT football head coach Eric Morris announced a change at defensive coordinator on Saturday with the dismissal of Matt Caponi and Brian Odom being named interim defensive coordinator for the remainder of the 2024 season.
"I'm grateful to Coach Caponi for his commitment and contributions to our program and student-athletes over the past two seasons," Morris said. "However, we believe a change on defense is needed at this point to help the team make a strong push toward earning a bowl game berth. I appreciate Coach Odom stepping up to take on this responsibility, and I'm confident he'll have our players well-prepared for Saturday."
Odom is in his first season coaching linebackers on the UNT staff following two seasons at USC as associate head coach for defense and inside linebacker coach. He has also had stints at Oklahoma, Missouri, Washington State, Houston and Arizona in his 20-year career. He previously served as interim defensive coordinator at both OU and USC.
UNT (5-5, 2-4) has two regular season games remaining at home against ECU on Nov. 23 and at Temple on Nov. 30.
