The Mean Green improved to 4-1 for the second consecutive season
DENTON, Texas – Kyla Deck hit a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining to seal a 62-59 win over Northwestern State for UNT women's basketball on Wednesday night at The Super Pit.
Deck, the Mean Green's third leading scorer on the season, totaled 14 points on the night, her second highest mark of the season. The junior guard has been clutch of late for North Texas, having gone a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line in her last two games, including 7-for-7 against NSU.
"Kyla [Deck] just had some tough plays tonight," head coach Jason Burton said. "[Deck] had some tough plays down the stretch — we found a way to win a game and that's what you want."
North Texas held the early advantage after getting out to a 22-15 lead in the first quarter. Tommisha Lampkin led the scoring with five points in the period.
Northwestern State stuck around in the second quarter despite not leading once in the period. Behind Lampkin's eight points and four rebounds, the Mean Green went into the locker room holding a 32-31 lead at halftime.
The Mean Green maintained the lead through the third quarter as both teams scored 13 points. Lampkin was integral down the stretch for North Texas, scoring nine of her 17 points on the night in the third and fourth quarters. The senior forward narrowly missed her fourth double double of the season, totaling nine rebounds against the Demons.
North Texas was able to close out the win out after fending off a surge from Mya Blake and NSU. Blake tied the game at the 7:30 mark in the fourth quarter with her first of three 3-pointers in the period. However, the Mean Green were able to force a miss from Blake as the clock ran out to secure the win.
With the win, North Texas advanced to 4-1 for the second consecutive season under Jason Burton. UNT will look to extend its winning streak to three games when it takes on Big 12-opponent, Houston, Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Fertitta Center.
