Women's Hoops Travel to Houston for Sunday Showdown With Cougars
11/22/2024 10:46:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team will get another crack at a Power Four opponent when it takes on the Houston Cougars out of the Big 12 Sunday at 2 p.m. CT at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas.
The Cougars are the second of three major conference opponents on the Mean Green's nonconference slate. North Texas fell to No. 25 Oregon on Nov. 12, but has Houston on Sunday and hosts SMU, who is the newest member of the ACC, on Dec. 19.
UNT has been able to bounce back nicely since their loss to the Ducks with wins over Abilene Christian and Northwestern State. It will look to extend the winning streak to three games against a Houston team that has started the season slowly with a 2-3 record.
Sunday's meeting will be the 21st in the history of the series and first since 2014. The Mean Green have dropped the last six contests against the Cougars and only won once on the road at Houston back in 1999.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on Varsity Network App with Zac Babb and Michelle Brooks on the call.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4
• UNT will face the Big 12's Houston Cougars at the Fertitta Center Sunday.
• The Cougars are the second Power Four opponent North Texas has faced this season.
• Sunday's game will be a homecoming for freshman Gwendlyn McGrew who played her high school ball at Pasadena Memorial HS in the Houston area.
• Tommisha Lampkin was named to the AAC Honor Roll Nov. 18 after registering her third double double of the year against ACU.
• UNT's roster features seven returners from last season and six newcomers, including two true freshmen.
ANYBODY ON ANY NIGHT
• UNT women's basketball had never had three players score 20+ points in a game until Nov. 4, 2024 against Alcorn State.
• Kyla Deck (27), Tommisha Lampkin (23) and Desiree Wooten (20) became the first trio to accomplish the feat in program history.
• UNT is one of two teams (Oral Roberts) to have three players score 20+ points in a game so far this season, and it was only done a total of 19 times in the 2023-24 campaign.
• Following Jaaucklyn Moore's 20-point performance against Texas Southern, UNT is one of seven teams in the country with four different 20-point scorers this season.
• To put the versatility of UNT's scoring into perspective, the Mean Green had a 20-point performance 18 times in the 2023-24 season with only three of them not coming from Tommisha Lampkin or DesiRay Kernal.
A WIN WOULD...
• Improve UNT to 5-1 on the season
• Make UNT's record on the road this season, 2-1
• Bring the series record to 14-7 in favor of UH
• Snap a six-game losing streak to the Cougars dating back to 2003
• Mark the Mean Green's second win at Houston and first since 1999
• Be UNT's first victory over a major conference opponent since defeating Arizona, 62-58, on Nov. 22, 2016
