Mean Green improve to 5-1 on the season with win
HOUSTON – A career-high 23 points from Desiree Wooten led the UNT women's basketball team to a dominat victory over Houston Sunday, marking the program's first win over a Power Four opponent since 2016.
UNT's 69-53 win over the Cougars is the largest margin of victory by UNT on the road at a Power Four foe.
"We talked about building something special at North Texas and this is a signature win for our program," head coach Jason Burton said. "To be able to go to a Power Four team's place and win a game is tough. We have one more Power Four opponent at home with SMU in a rivalry game. If you can have a winning record against major conference teams, it shows we can get it done at North Texas."
Wooten and the Mean Green came out on fire taking a 9-0 lead to open the game. Despite a five-minute scoring drought late in the first quarter, the Mean Green were able to double up the Cougars in the period by holding the home team to 3-of-15 shooting in the period.
North Texas used runs at the beginning of each quarter to keep Houston at a distance and hold the lead the entire game. The Mean Green started the second quarter with a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 22-6. After taking a 29-21 lead into halftime, UNT opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run and used a 14-2 run in the fourth to ice the game after Houston had cut the lead to four with eight minutes to play.
Tommisha Lampkin added 17 points and 10 rebounds to collect her fourth double double of the season. She also reached another milestone in her decorated career, moving into the top 10 of UNT's career scoring list with 1,113 points.
Kyla Deck was the third UNT player to reach double figures with 13 points on the day, while Ereauna Hardaway posted nine points, five assists and four rebounds.
Now 5-1 on the season, UNT will have the week of Thanksgiving off before going back on the road to play at New Mexico on Sunday, Dec. 1.
