DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team beat Texas Wesleyan 73-66 Thursday night at the Super Pit.
Four different Mean Green players scored in double figures as they improved to 3-0 at home this season. Senior Atin Wright scored a game-high and a season high 19 points. Brenen Lorient added 11 points off the bench for North Texas, his second straight game with double digit scoring. Grant Newell scored a season-high 10 points and Johnathan Massie scored in double figures for the third time this season as finished with 10 off the bench.
"I felt like our early turnovers gifted them eight points in transition to start the game and when you give a talented team, a team that we knew was talented, time to settle in and get easy baskets you're in for a dog fight," said head coach Ross Hodge. "I thought we did a much better job on defending Vegas Evans in the second half. But they're a really good team and when you don't play well, they have the experience to take advantage of that. I'm proud though of how our team regrouped to get this win."
UNT (4-1) trailed at the half 36-32 and the Rams' (4-1) Evans had 18 of his team's 36 total points.
The Mean Green, however, opened the second half with the aggressive defense that they're accustomed to and immediately jumped back into the lead, which they wouldn't let go from there on out. After his strong first half performance, North Texas held Evans to zero second half points.
Next up for the Mean Green is a home contest against Oregon State on Monday at 7 p.m. CT. It will be the first time the two teams have ever met.
