Men's Basketball Beats Wayland Baptist 80-38

DENTON — Atin Wright's 16 points and Rondel Walker's 10 rebounds paced the UNT men's basketball team as they beat Wayland Baptist 80-38 at the Super Pit Thursday night.

The 42-point win is the Mean Green's (2-0) largest margin of victory since 2020 and they have now opened this season with back-to-back double-digit wins in which they scored exactly 80 points in each.

"I love how our team celebrates each other." said head coach Ross Hodge. "They genuinely celebrate each others success and root for each other. That's a really good trait to have"

"Our guards have done a great job at going and grabbing rebounds. We're a deep team and getting all those guys experience when the game is still tight was huge," he added.

Fourteen North Texas players saw action on Thursday night and 12 of them scored. Wright and Latrell Jossell were the only ones to score in double figures as they combined for 28 points. Freshmen Tyran Mason, Ma'syn Howell and Brock Vice all saw the floor for the first time and scored their first career points.

Walker led the team with his 10 rebounds, it's the fourth time in the senior's career he's grabbed double digit rebounds in a game.

Through its first two games of the year, UNT has now made 18 3-pointers at a 42 percent clip. They've grabbed 31 total offensive rebounds and have dished out 26 assists with a positive 1.2 assist to turnover ratio.

The last time UNT beat an opponent by 40 or more was on Nov. 26, 2020 when they defeated Mississippi Valley State 116-62. It's also the first time since 2020 the Mean Green have scored 80 or more points in consecutive games.

Next up for the Mean Green is their first road test as they head to Minnesota on Wednesday for a an 7 p.m. CT tip. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network + and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
