The Mean Green (3-0) held the Golden Gophers (2-1) to just 14 first half points and ended the game on a game-clinching fast break dunk by Brenen Lorient to pick up the program's third straight win over a Big Ten opponent and to remain undefeated on the year.
Wednesday, North Texas was paced by Rondel Walker who finished with 14 points and three steals. It's the most points the second year Mean Green player has scored in a UNT uniform. Jasper Floyd had seven points and five assists as he steadied the Mean Green in the second half as Minnesota made its comeback. Floyd has had five assists in each of UNT's first three games.
"I'm really proud of how we stuck together," Walker said. "We came out strong and showed them what Mean Green defense is. They're a really good team and fought back strong but we stayed together and won together."
UNT is 3-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 season. They have three straight victories over Big Ten opponents — Minnesota in 2024, Wisconsin in 2023 and Purdue in the NCAA Tournament in 2021.
North Texas is now 26-10 (.722) in all true road games since the start of the 2021-22 season. Only Houston, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's have been better since then.
UNT remains on the road as they travel to the reigning Southland Conference champion McNeese on Monday for a 6 p.m. CT tip from Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Cowboys and Mean Green were both in the Southland conference from 1982-96.
