Men's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short At McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — The UNT men's basketball team came from double digit down in the second half to take a lead but couldn't make the plays in the end as they fell to McNeese on the road 68-61 Monday night, pushing the Cowboys' home winning streak to 20 in a row.
The Mean Green (3-1) had four players score in double figures led by junior Brenen Lorient who matched his single-game career high of 12 points. Senior Johnathan Massie grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with a 10-point performance.
"Our inability to execute offensively I take a lion share of the responsibility for that and down the stretch we weren't able to defend without fouling late in the game," said head coach Ross Hodge. "But you got to give (McNeese) a ton of credit. I thought they were the tougher team and played with a higher sense of urgency."
North Texas trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and was down 13 at the half.
A 5-0 run to start the second half reset the Mean Green and got them back into the game. With 12 minutes remaining, senior Atin Wright drilled a 3-pointer to give UNT a two-point advantage. Its first lead in 20 minutes of game action.
North Texas pushed its late lead to seven points with seven minutes to go but slowly the reigning Southland Conference champs chipped away as they drew fouls and scored around the rim. The Cowboys (2-2) shot 39 free throws Monday.
UNT returns home Thursday to host Texas Wesleyan at the Super Pit at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
