LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — The UNT men's basketball team takes its 3-0 start to McNeese for a Monday night showdown against the reigning Southland Conference champs aiming to end the Cowboys' 19-game home winning streak.
The Mean Green (3-0) and McNeese (1-2) are scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. CT from the Cowboys' Legacy Center. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPN+.
North Texas enters Monday night's game coming off a 54-51 road win over Minnesota last Wednesday where the Mean Green flexed their defensive prowess, holding the Golden Gophers to just 14 first half points on only three made field goals. It was UNT's first road game of the season and was its fourth road win in its last five road contests dating back to last season. Over the last four years, the Mean Green have the nation's fourth-best road winning percentage (.722).
The win over Minnesota improved UNT's record to 3-0, it's the first time they've started a season with three straight wins since the 2018-19 season when they began the year 8-0.
On Monday, the Mean Green will face a Cowboys team that owns a 19-game home winning streak and is led by second-year head coach Will Wade who has made five trips to the NCAA Tournament, including last season in his first year at McNeese. The Cowboys won 30 games a season ago, had road wins over Michigan, UAB, VCU and were 17-1 in the Southland Conference in route to the SLC regular season and tournament title. McNeese hasn't lost a home game under Wade. Its last home loss came on Feb. 18, 2023.
Wade previously served as the head coach at Chattanooga (2013-15), VCU (2015-17) and LSU (2017-22). He has never had losing season in his previous 10 years.
McNeese is off to a 1-2 start but battled No. 2 Alabama last Monday to a 72-64 defeat. Three different Cowboys scored in double figures led by Sincere Parker who scored 19 points on 16 shots.
Monday's matchup pins two programs that were both in the Southland Conference together from 1982-96. Over those 14 seasons, they played each other every year at least twice a year. They met six times in the conference tournament with the Mean Green winning four of them. Though they've played twice since 1996, Monday will be the first time UNT has traveled to Lake Charles since leaving the conference 28 years ago.
UNT leads the all-time series history 20-17 and has won the last two meetings, most recently on Dec. 9, 2017, at the Super Pit, 85-47.
After Monday's game, the Mean Green return home to host Texas Wesleyan on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.
