Fleming joins Mean Green after 20 years at DII Colorado Mesa
DENTON, Texas – Dave Fleming has been hired as the 11th head coach for the UNT volleyball program, Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley announced Tuesday.
"Dave Fleming brings a wealth of experience and a proven ability to build successful teams, making him the perfect fit to lead our volleyball program," Mosley said. "His dedication to developing well-rounded student-athletes and creating a culture of excellence perfectly aligns with our mission here at UNT of Building Champions and Preparing Leaders.
"We're thrilled to welcome him to the Mean Green Family and are confident in the future of our volleyball program under his leadership."
Prior to joining the Mean Green, Fleming spent 20 years as head coach at Colorado Mesa where he posted a record of 390-184. During the 2024 season, he was the active wins leader among all Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference coaches.
In 2024, Fleming notched his fourth-consecutive 20-win season and led CMU to the NCAA Division II Tournament, his 11th trip with the Mavericks. Fleming's team led the RMAC with 14.60 kills per set and 13.56 assists per set, holding top 10 marks in all of Division II in both categories.
"I am excited for the opportunity to lead the UNT volleyball program and am committed to making the Mean Green Family proud," Fleming said. "I would like to express my gratitude to Jared Mosley and President Keller along with Jessie Gardner and Dr. Connor Smith for this incredible opportunity. It was a difficult decision to leave Colorado Mesa, I loved my time there, but it is hard not to recognize the incredible opportunities at UNT. I cannot wait to get to Denton, meet our student-athletes and get to work."
Over his 20-year tenure with the Mavs, Fleming has won four RMAC Coach of the Year awards and added AVCA South Central Region Coach of the Year honors in 2014. He coached 21 All-Americans and 80 all-conference players, including three RMAC Player of the Year winners, three Setter of the Year honorees and three Freshman of the Year selections.
Fleming, who holds the Colorado Mesa record with a .679 career winning percentage, tallied 258 league victories, including a 65-10 mark over the past five seasons, and won four conference championships during his time in Grand Junction. The Mavs have held a position inside the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll for the past 41 consecutive weeks, a streak that dates to Aug. 29, 2022.
Before he took the head job at CMU, Fleming served as an assistant coach at UCLA for four seasons. During his time in Los Angeles, the Bruins compiled a record of 86-43 and earned four bids to the NCAA Tournament with Elite Eight appearances in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Fleming worked under head coach Andy Banachowski, who ended his 43-year career with six national championships and 1,106 wins, all at UCLA. In 1997, Banachowski was the first coach inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
From 1994-96, Fleming held an assistant coaching role for USA Volleyball with the Women's National Team. The team helped host the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta after it won the nation's first gold medal in a major competition at the 1995 FIVB World Grand Prix. Fleming worked under head coach Terry Liskevych and alongside assistant coaches Aldis Berzins and Jeanne Beauprey Reeves while with the national team.
He began his coaching career as a student assistant with the women's team at Denison University before he earned a bachelor's degree in geology with a minor in physical education in 1992. Fleming played and coached the men's club volleyball team while also starting for the varsity tennis team.
In 1994, Fleming graduated from the University of Michigan with a master's degree in kinesiology. During his time in Ann Arbor, he worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the women's team and played for the men's club volleyball team.
After his stint with USA Volleyball, he became head coach at Valhalla High School in El Cajon, Calif., where he won coach of the year and a conference championship over two seasons. While in California, Fleming also worked as a club coach for San Diego Volleyball Club (1994-2001) and Sports Shack Volleyball Club (2001-04). In 2012, he was a founding member of Mesa Juniors Volleyball Company in Palisade, Colo., and served as President of the Board of Directors.
UNT retained Collegiate Sports Solutions to conduct an extensive national search for head coach candidates. Fleming's hiring is contingent upon completion of the university background check process and other applicable requirements.
