Men's Basketball Travels To High Point Friday
12/4/2024 5:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The Mean Green and Panthers are scheduled to tip-off from the Quebin Center at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPN+.
Friday will be North Texas' (6-2) final road non-conference game of the year. They'll face a HPU (8-2) team that has won 22 of its 24 home games under second-year head coach Alan Huss, including a 68-65 home victory over reigning American Athletic Conference Tournament champion UAB on Nov. 15.
One of the two teams to defeat the Panthers in their home arena over the last two seasons was Longwood in the semifinals of last season's Big South Conference Tournament. On that Longwood team was current Mean Green guard Johnathan Massie.
Massie and the Lancers upset the tournament's No. 1 seed and host, 80-79 in overtime after erasing a 15-point deficit with just 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Massie had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists as he helped lead the fifth-seeded Lancers to the finals where they defeated UNC Asheville. 85-59.
Friday will be the first ever meeting between High Point and North Texas. The matchup pins on of the nation's most efficient defenses in UNT against one of the nation's most efficient offenses in HPU.
North Texas enters Friday holding opponents to just 56 points per game and forcing opponents into more than 15 turnovers per game. Meanwhile the Panthers are scoring more than 75 points per game and shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor.
Following Friday's game at High Point, the Mean Green will have a 12-day break for finals before hosting three games in five days, starting with Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 18.
