Mean Green able to come from behind after dropping the doubles point
CONWAY, Ark. – After dropping the doubles point for just the second time all season, the UNT tennis team responded in a big way, grabbing five of the six singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over Southeast Missouri Thursday at the UCA Tennis Courts.
The Mean Green picked up singles wins from Stanislava Shulzhenko, Olivia Malm, Lou Chalard, Olivia Halvorsen and Carolina Laydner to snap a two-match losing skid and improve to 5-3 on the year.
In doubles play, Marina Adati and Shulzhenko teamed up at line three four a 6-4 victory, but the Redhawks were able to grab a pair of 6-4 victories at lines one and two to win the doubles point.
Trailing 1-0, UNT responded in a big way with five singles wins, four of which came in straight sets.
Malm, playing in her first dual match of the season, got the Mean Green on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at line two.
Moments later, Shulzhenko put UNT on top 2-1 with a straight sets 6-3, 6-3 win of her own playing at line one.
At line four, Chalard continued her strong start to her career with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to improve her singles record to 4-2 on the young season.
After SEMO took home a win at line three to make the team score 3-2, Halvorsen won the match-clinching point with a hard fought 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory at line five.
A bit later, Laydner added another point to the tally for UNT with a come-from-behind win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to make the final score 5-2 in favor of the Mean Green.
UNT will look to keep the momentum going Friday when they take on Central Arkansas at 10:00 AM in Conway.
