
Mean Green Track & Field Set for AAC Indoor Championships

DENTON, Texas – The UNT track & field team is set to compete at the 2024 AAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., Friday and Saturday at UAB's Birmingham Crossplex.
The meet will start Friday morning with the pentathlon and heptathlon. Seven field events will be completed Friday afternoon, including the weight throw, long jump, pole vault and men's high jump. The running events will begin their preliminary rounds at 1:05 p.m. on Friday until the 5,000 meters and Distance Medley Relays crown champions to round out the first day of competition.
Action will resume on Saturday morning with the conclusion of the heptathlon and the remaining events. The championships are set to conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 3:25 p.m. with the awards ceremony following.
The Mean Green will enter the AAC Championships with eight athletes having top-five marks among individuals in the conference, led by KeAyla Dove. The 2023 CUSA Outdoor champion in shot put, Dove is the overwhelming favorite to win the women's shot put. She is ranked No. 6 in the nation with a personal-best throw of 17.85 meters she set a the Robert Platt Invitational on Jan. 26, which broke the school and conference record.
Following Dove, Allison Stigarll is ranked fifth in the conference in the women's weight throw with a distance of 17.74 meters.
On the men's side, Sukeil Foucha has the second-best time in the conference in the 800 meters. His school record time of 1:51.80 at the Husky Classic is less than a second behind South Florida's Karim Belmahdi's 1:51.34. Foucha will be joined in the race by Luke Canon who has the fifth-best mark in the conference this season at 1:52.90.
The men's field events are highlighted by three freshmen, including two high jumpers. Armando Acevedo and Ricardo Levya enter their first conference championships projected to finish third and fifth based on results from this season. Acevedo missed the first three meets of the season, but recorded top-10 finishes at the Washburn Open and Jarvis Scott Open. Pole vaulter Jake Dorrell will look to jump into the top three places to earn all-conference honors after setting a personal best in his last meet, while the program's school record holder in the weight throw, Jake Parchman, will aim for his first conference title.
According to the conference, all-conference honorees will be determined by their placements with the top-three finishers in each event earning first, second or third team honors. The men's and women's most valuable performance will be awarded to the athlete with the most amount of overall points, while the most outstanding track performer and field performer will be given to the athlete that finishes highest on the NCAA performance list prior to the NCAA Championships.
In order to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held March 8-9 in Boston, Mass., individuals must finish in the top-16 nationally in their event, while the top-12 relay teams will advance to nationals.
