The Mean Green (14-12, 7-7) led for nearly 34 minutes over the Roadrunners (9-19, 3-12) but UTSA ended the game on a 18-9 run and took the final go-ahead lead with 1:49 remaining. North Texas had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Jason Edwards' would-be go-ahead 3-pointer was blocked.
"Definitely give credit to UTSA and coach Henson," said Mean Green head coach Ross Hodge. "They did a great job. We just didn't execute well enough defensively at the end of the game. UTSA was the tougher team today."
North Texas was led in scoring by Edwards who scored 15 points but limited to just one made 3-pointer. Robert Allen grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with nine points.
Saturday UNT guards Rubin Jones and CJ Noland made their return from injury. Noland scored 12 points and Jones had seven points to go along with four rebounds in 19 minutes of action.
Noland had missed the previous five games to a groin injury and Jones had missed 11 of the last 12 games to a hamstring injury.
Next up for the Mean Green is a road game at Tulane on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
