OCALA, Fla. - UNT junior Shaena McCloud wrapped up a banner month in the pool for the Mean Green with three A-Final showings at the CSCAAÂ National Invitational Championships and set a new program record in the 100 butterfly - her third in as many weeks after she set two new benchmarks at The American Championships.
Her showing highlighted a strong one for the Mean Green on the national stage as they sent a contingent of five swimmers to the event and also had diving scores counted from the NCAA Zone Championships earlier in the week.
McCloud made the A-Final in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly and finished just off the podium in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.85. Her preliminary time of 53.72 in the 100 butterfly set a new school record. She also swam the lead leg in the 200 freestyle relay, and along with Samantha Robles, Emily Ally and Diana Kolb finished 22nd.
"Shaena McCloud was on fire this week," UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. "She had an incredible AAC showing, breaking two team records, earning a podium finish in her 100 free, and narrowly missing a third school record. She followed that performance this week at the NIC with three A-Final performances and she established her third school record this week in the 100 butterfly. She's been working so hard throughout the offseason and throughout the season to strengthen and fine tune her performances, and she is reaping the rewards of the effort and consistency. She's a racer, and her ability to stay poised and move with confidence has truly helped her in these high performance environments."
Senior Diana Kolb finished seventh to earn points for the team in the B-Final of the 100 backstroke with a 55.52, while junior Kailey Turner narrowly missed scoring points with a 24th-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a 2:04.13.
In diving, scores from the NCAA Zone D Championship in Houston earlier in the week counted toward the team score at the NIC, led by freshman Sydney Guidara, whose 262.55 in the 3-meter springboard was good for a fifth-place finish at the NIC, and her 255.05 in the 1-meter springboard put her in eighth place for the NIC. Senior Saylor Hawkins earned an eighth-place finish in the 3-meter with a 258.55 at Zones and her 203.40 in the platform was good for 10th place.
"I'm really proud of the team's performance this week at Zones and the NIC," Roth said. "Representing UNT on the national stage is always exciting, and the tenacity our athletes showed lends to their strength as a team. It's great to see our team members embrace the challenge of competing at the next level and their fearlessness and willingness to rise to the occasion is something they deserve to be proud of. It's extremely hard to swim faster than ever at this age and level, and even harder to perform on a second taper, and our team members this week were able to put together some solid performances that were either at their best or in line with their best times."
