BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — The UNT men's basketball team advanced to the second round of the 2024 NIT with an 84-77 win at LSU Tuesday night.
The Mean Green (19-14), who are the reigning NIT champions, had one of their best offensive performances of the season against the Tigers (17-16) as they shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, had 13 assists and scored a season-high 84 points.
"I have a ton of respect for (LSU) head coach McMahon and the program they're building here," said UNT head coach Ross Hodge. "I thought our physicality around the rim was big for us tonight. They hit a lot of 3s tonight but being physical was an emphasis going into the game."
Four different Mean Green players scored in double figures led by CJ Noland's 21, his second 20-point game of his career.
Rubin Jones poured in 17 points to go along with four steals, four assists and four rebounds. In five career games against SEC opponents, Jones is now averaging 14 points per game. He scored a career-high 20 points versus Mississippi State on Dec. 17.
Jason Edwards, Aaron Scott and Robert Allen combined for 38 of North Texas' 84 points.
With Tuesday's win the Mean Green will play the winner of Seton Hall and Saint Joseph's who face each other Wednesday in South Orange, New Jersey at 6 p.m. CT.
