
Women’s Basketball Claims Share of AAC Championship in Win Over Memphis

The Mean Green clinched their first conference title since the 1985-86 season
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team claimed a share of its first conference title since the 1985-86 season with a 78-66 victory over Memphis Tuesday night inside The Super Pit.
The Mean Green improved to 23-7 on the season and 13-5 in American Athletic Conference play, clinching a share of the regular season title with Tulsa. Temple will also have a chance to gain a share of the championship Wednesday night.
DesiRay Kernal led the Mean Green with a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds, marking her sixth consecutive game with a double double and fourth in-a-row with 20 or more points. Tommisha Lampkin followed Kernal with 16 points of her own in the win.
Memphis came out hot having won five straight games entering Tuesday night. The Tigers jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter, which would be their largest of the game.
North Texas erased that deficit in a hurry taking its first lead of the game a minute into the second quarter that it wouldn't give up again. The Mean Green took a 34-26 lead into halftime shooting 60% in the first half.
UNT dominated the Tigers in the frontcourt, outscoring Memphis in the paint 26-2 in the first half and 40-16 over the entire game.
Memphis would battle back in the third quarter behind 11 points from Madison Griggs. The leading scorer for Memphis, Griggs finished with 24 points that included six 3-pointers. The Tigers made a living on the offensive boards, racking up 15 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points.
Leading 60-58 with 4:46 to play, UNT would outscore Memphis 18-8 over the remainder of the game to seal the win in front of a crowd of 2,528. It was the fifth-largest crowd for a women's basketball game at The Super Pit in program history.
With the win, North Texas clinched the second seed at the AAC tournament. The AAC Championship will begin in Fort Worth on Saturday, but UNT will not play until Monday night at 6 p.m. CT against the winner of No. 7 UAB and No. 10 Rice.
