HOUSTON — The UNT men's basketball team travels to Rice Saturday night for its final regular season game before the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship begins.
The Mean Green (16-13, 9-8) and the Owls (11-19, 5-12) are scheduled to tip-off Saturday at 7 p.m. CT from the Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
Saturday will be the 33rd all-time meeting between North Texas and Rice but the first this season. Over the last seven seasons there is no road venue the Mean Green have visited more than the Tudor Fieldhouse. UNT heads into the game having won 11 of the last 13 meetings overall versus the Owls and having won three straight at Rice's home gym.
Since 2019, North Texas is averaging 76.0 points per game against Rice and is averaging 80.0 points per game played in Houston. UNT has started to pick up the offense as of late. The Mean Green are averaging 80 points per game over their last three games, including scoring a season-high 84 points in a 15-point victory over East Carolina last week.
John Buggs III has had the hot hand shooting. The junior has made 10 of his last 13 3-point attempts. He currently leads the American in 3-point field goal percentage at 47.8 percent.
On Wednesday versus Florida Atlantic, UNT guard Jason Edwards recorded his fifth 30-point game of the year. It ties the program record for most single-season 30-point games. Edwards is averaging 19.0 points per game this season, which ranks third in American.
Edwards has scored so far 552 points this season, which ranks 16th in program history for single season scoring.
Regardless of Saturday's result in Houston, the Mean Green are locked in as the 7-seed for the AAC Men's Basketball Championship next week in Fort Worth. UNT has earned a first-round bye and will face the 10th seed in its opening round game on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT from Dickies Arena.
Entering Saturday there is a three-team tie for the 10th seed, one of which is Rice.
