DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team has signed former NJCAA National Champion and do-it-all transfer guard Jasper Floyd.
He comes to North Texas after spending one season at Fairfield where he led the Stags to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament title game, the CBI title game and the program's most single season wins in 13 years. Fairfield won 24 games, which was one off the program record and was an 11-win improvement from the year prior to Floyd's arrival.
He will have one year of eligibility remaining.
The 6-foot-3 Tampa, Florida native led the Stags in assists with 153 (4.1 per game), rebounds with 220 (6.0 per game), steals with 87 (2.0 per game) and had the best assist-turnover ratio on the team at +2.0. Floyd set the Fairfield program record for single season steals last year (87).
Floyd was one of just two players in the country last season to average at least 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Over the last five years he's only one of four to accomplish that.
He was second on the team in total minutes played as he logged 1,199 minutes over 37 games played and was fourth in scoring as he averaged 9.5 points per game and shot 38.5 percent from the floor. He had three 20-point games last season including a season-high 25 points in a four-point road win at Yale on Dec. 6. Last year Yale went on to win the Ivy League and beat Auburn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The lefty played all 40 minutes in the road win and had five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Floyd, who graduated from Wharton High School in Tampa in 2021, began his collegiate career at Northwest Florida State College. As a true freshman he helped lead the Raiders to the 2022 NJCAA DI National Championship. Floyd played in 29 games for NWF State, including 16 minutes in the championship game against Salt Lake Community College. He scored four points, had six rebounds and an assist in the win.
Former UNT men's basketball player Javion Hamlet who led the Mean Green to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win in 2021 played at NWF State before coming to North Texas.
After one season at NWF State, Floyd transferred to Hillsborough College in 2022. He was the team captain and averaged 14.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
North Texas is coming off a 19-win season under first-year head coach Ross Hodge where they reached the second round of the NIT. He was the only rookie head coach last year to lead his respective team to either the NCAA Tournament or NIT. The Mean Green won 10 league games in their first season in the American Athletic Conference. It was the most league wins by a first year UNT head coach. UNT is one of just seven schools in the country who has won a NCAA postseason game in each of the last four seasons.
