DENTON - Second-year UNT men's golf coach Luke Calcatera will be joined by six new faces to his program this upcoming season, giving him a deep roster of 11 with the five players returning from last year's squad that finished fifth in the American Athletic Conference last season.
Having been at UNT for just more than a year now, this year's incoming class will mark the first that was recruited solely by Calcatera and it features several players with Texas ties.
Two incoming freshmen hail from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, as Alex Huang will join the Mean Green after a prep career at Plano West and Blake Keen comes to Denton after playing high school golf at Burleson Centennial.
The transfer additions include Dylan Allen (VCU), Loic Ettlin (Mississippi State), Joe Stover (Texas A&M) and James Tureskis (Florida State).
Allen, who's a junior, grew up in France before attending high school in Maryland and starting his college career at Gardner-Webb. He played in three events last season for VCU - all as an individual - and had to subpar rounds out of the eight he played. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Ettlin, who was a member of the Swiss Golf Elite National Team and was the Swiss Junior Player of the Year in both 2017 and 2018, spent four years at Mississippi State and has one year of eligibility remaining after redshirting his junior year. He played in 16 events for the Bulldogs.
Stover, who was a high school teammate of UNT's Key Coker at state powerhouse Highland Park, comes from Texas A&M, where he played in four tournaments a year ago - all as an individual - after redshirting his freshman year in 2022-23, when he tied for eighth in the Texas Amateur while posting the lowest final-round score in the field with a 68. His father, Matt, had a 20-year NFL career as a placekicker and was a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens.
Tureskis comes from Florida State with one year of eligibility remaining after being a part of a Seminoles squad that fell in the NCAA Championship Final to Auburn in May. Tureskis played in three events last season and had a season-best finish of T41 at the Seminole Intercollegiate, where UNT also competed. Prior to his time in Tallahassee, he was a two-time Florida high school state champion at Naples.
"Signing day is always an exciting time because it's when young players make their decision to be a part of our program," Calcatera said. "The foundation of our program has always been players wanting to be part of North Texas golf and coaches wanting them to be part of North Texas golf. I believe we have added six quality young men with talent to help us win championships. We have been able to add two freshmen from the DFW Metroplex that we feel are ready to go out and compete right now. Alex Huang from Plano and Blake Keen from Burleson. Alex is currently the No. 7 player in the class of 2024 on Junior Golf Scoreboard and Blake is No. 65 and recently won his third straight TJGT Tour Championship. We also added four transfers that are coming in with tournament experience in Joe Stover, James Tureskis, Loic Ettlin and Dylan Allen."
The Mean Green will kick off the season on Sept. 1-2, at the Island Resort Intercollegiate in Harris, Michigan.
Fans can follow the program throughout the year on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
