Soccer Heads To Tulsa
9/18/2024 2:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Thursday's first kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT from the Hurricane Soccer Stadium and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Mean Green (5-2-2) enter Thursday's league match having shutout its last four straight opponents, which includes a 1-0 win over Florida Atlantic in their conference opener. Tulsa (4-4-2) is aiming to get back on track as they head into the match on a three-game losing streak that included a 1-0 defeat at Rice in their conference opener.
The Golden Hurricane most recently fell 2-1 at home to (RV) Oklahoma on Sunday. It was their first home loss of the season. All four of Tulsa's wins so far this season have come at home.
North Texas drew 0-0 at Abilene Christian on Sunday in its most recent match.
The Mean Green are conceding just 0.5 goals per match so far this year while Tulsa is scoring on average nearly three goals per match.
UNT head coach John Hedlund believes with his defense if his side can score two or more goals in any match they should win. The Mean Green are on a 22-match unbeaten streak when scoring two or more goals.
Since the start of the 2017 season, North Texas is 69-2-6 in matches where they score two or more goals. The only two defeats came in a 4-3 double overtime home loss to No. 15 Oklahoma State in 2021 and a 3-2 home loss to Oklahoma in 2022 where three of the matches' five total goals were scored in the game's first 11 minutes.
North Texas hasn't lost a true road match in which it scored two or more goals since Oct. 6, 2013. The Mean Green are on a 34-match unbeaten streak when scoring two or more goals on the road and have only tied once over those 34 matches.
Thursday will be the seventh all-time meeting between Tulsa and North Texas. The Mean Green lead the all-time series 4-1-1. The two programs met last year in Denton and played to a 2-2 draw. Current UNT senior Bailey Wesco scored both Mean Green goals in the match and nearly scored a third.
After Thursday's match North Texas will have a week off. They'll return home on Sept. 26 to host Temple at 7 p.m. CT. The Mean Green will honor their seniors pregame.
