TULSA, Oklahoma — The match took nearly 17 and a half hours, featured a goal by the Mean Green's goalkeeper and spanned over two days but the UNT soccer team defeated Tulsa 3-1, officially ending Friday afternoon.
The result improves North Texas to 2-0 in conference and extends its unbeaten streak to eight in a row.
"I know the team really wanted this win and to be first in the standings," said head coach John Hedlund who picked up his 399th career victory with the result. "But they also want me to get my 400th win at home in front of our fans next Thursday. That's what makes this team special, we're always thinking about each other, and we all put the team first."
In the win over Tulsa, the Mean Green (6-2-2, 2-0) got goals from Claire Niedermeier [13'] and Mia Bernard [23'] Thursday night to put UNT up early. Then in the 35th minute the match was suspended due to lightning. After waiting nearly two hours it was decided the match would resume Friday at 11 a.m.
Once restarted, North Texas kept its foot on the gas, however, a Golden Hurricane (4-5-2, 0-2) goal in the 52nd minute off a corner kick made it just a one score game. The Tulsa goal ended the Mean Green's shutout streak. They hadn't conceded a goal since Aug. 30 and in 436 straight minutes of game action.
Despite giving up the goal, UNT keeper Maddie Ogden made up for it and put the match away in the 70th minute when she scored from almost midfield on a free kick after a Golden Hurricane foul. The goal is Ogden's second career goal, she scored last season at UTSA on a similar situation. She is the only Mean Green keeper in the program's 30-year history to score a goal, let alone two.
Over the 90-minute match at Tulsa, North Texas outshot its opponent 21-5 and put 11 of its shots on target.
With the 3-1 win, UNT is now 70-2-6 since the start of the 2017 season when scoring two or more goals in a match. They improve their all-time record versus Tulsa to 5-1-1.
Next up for the Mean Green is a home match versus Temple on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. CT.
