DENTON — UNT soccer head coach John Hedlund won his 400th career game on Thursday in a 6-0 home victory over Temple at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
Hedlund, who founded the North Texas women's soccer program in 1995 and has been its only head coach, is just the 20th DI women's soccer head coach to reach the 400-win mark and only the sixth to do so at one university.
Hedlund is the university's all-time winningest head coach for any sport by total wins and winning percentage. He has nearly 200 more wins than the next closest, Tina Slinker (women's basketball 1989-08).
"I'm really happy with the win especially how we played in the second half," Hedlund said post-match. "As far as the program's 400th win, it was very special to do it at home on senior day in front of our fans. It was great to see several former players here after the game as well, that really meant a lot to me, and they were such a big part of those 400 wins."
With the 6-0-win, North Texas (7-2-2, 3-0-0), who entered Thursday atop the American Athletic Conference standings, extends its unbeaten streak to nine in a row. The Mean Green outshot the Owls (2-9-0, 0-2-0) on Thursday 32-2. This was North Texas' eighth shutout of the year.
UNT got the scoring started in the 18th minute when senior Rachel Roebuck converted a penalty kick. It was her first career penalty kick attempt and her team leading seventh goal of the year.
Two minutes later Mia Bernard scored her second goal in as many matches. Fellow sophomore Alexis Miller assisted on the goal. Through three conference matches so far, Bernard and Miller have been responsible for five of their team's 10 league goals.
UNT took its two-goal lead into the half but quickly in the second half senior Bailey Wesco scored her third goal of the season.
Freshman Claire Niedermeier took it from there as the Heath native scored North Texas' final three goals over a 17-minute period in the second half. Niedermeier becomes the 24th member of the UNT hat trick club. Four of UNT's last five hat tricks have been accomplished by a freshman.
Thursday marked the second year in a row the Mean Green have won a league match by six or more goals.
UNT has a quick turnaround as they travel to East Carolina on Sunday to play the Pirates. First kick is scheduled for noon CT and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
