Soccer Suffers First Conference Loss

GREENVILLE, North Carolina — The UNT soccer team fell 3-0 Sunday afternoon at East Carolina.
With the result, the Mean Green (7-3-2, 3-1-0) suffer their first conference defeat of the year and have their league leading nine-match unbeaten streak snapped.
"A disappointing loss considering we dominated play most of the game," said head coach John Hedlund. "Late in the second half shots were 14-2 us but the scoreboard said we're down 1-0. We started throwing numbers up field the last 15 minutes to get the tying goal and unfortunately it backfired giving up two goals."
The Pirates (5-2-4, 2-1-1) opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a tremendous shot by Sydney Schnell from distance. ECU took that one-goal lead into the second half. In the 79th minute the Pirates took a two-goal lead after the Mean Green were called for a handball in the box and ECU converted on the penalty kick. Schenll finished off UNT with her second goal of the match in the 83rd minute to finalize the scoring.
North Texas had plenty of scoring opportunities as they put seven shots on target to ECU's five and 14 total shots to the Pirates' six. The Mean Green twice hit the cross bar.
"Obviously it didn't help sitting in an airport yesterday all day with all the flight delays we went through and getting here late last night but it's only one loss and we will move on at 3-1 in conference and get ready for our home game on Thursday," Hedlund said.
UNT returns home on Thursday to host UTSA at 7 p.m. CT. It will be the Mean Green's pink game. North Texas will head into the match on a five-game home winning streak.
