SAN ANTONIO – UNT volleyball opened American Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win at UTSA on Friday night at the Convocation Center.
The Mean Green (4-8, 1-0) collected its third-consecutive win in the opening match of conference play, each under head coach Kristee Porter, with the four-set victory (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 26-24) over the Roadrunners (6-8, 0-1).
Junior Payton Van Veen led UNT with 35 attacks and collected 11.5 points with nine kills, three blocks and one service ace.
"I wanted to be as aggressive as I could be," Van Veen said. "I think our passing did really well and our setters were really consistent."
Setters Kamryn Scroggins (18), Claire Dewine (12) and Alexa Washington (10) each tallied double-digit assists in the match as Scroggins posted her third double-double of the season with a match-best mark of 15 digs. Friday marked the first time three UNT players recorded double-digit assists since Sept. 4, 2023.
UNT dropped the first set after it built a late 22-20 lead in the frame but rebounded by sweeping sets two through four. The last time the Mean Green won a match after losing the first set was against Wichita State on Nov. 4, 2023, with a reverse sweep of the Shockers.
Outside hitter Aryn Johnson led UNT with 10 kills and 14.0 points including a critical kill, at 24-24, late in the fourth set to set up match point. Johnson leads the Mean Green in kills and has set the high-water mark for the team in six of its 12 matches.
