DENTON - Several standout performances and a new Pohl Recreation Center pool record helped lead the UNT swim and dive team to a victory over Big 12 foe Iowa State on Saturday afternoon.
The Mean Green notched a 165-135 win over the Cyclones, as UNT stole the momentum right from the beginning as the day's first event saw a pool record fall after the 200 medley relay team of Diana Kolb, Mikaela Goelst, Samantha Robles and Shaena McCloud broke the facility record with a time of 1:44.59. Goelst also won an individual race with a victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.77.
Kolb and McCloud were two of several UNT student-athletes who earned double victories in individual events as Kolb won both the 100 backstroke (56.66) and 200 backstroke (2:04.43), and McCloud took the 50 freestyle (23.64) and the 100 butterfly (56.96), while she also anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay team, along with Indra Vandenbussche, Samantha Robles and Scarlett McCloud.
Other double-winners included Vandenbussche, who won both the 100 and 200 freestyle in 51.53 and 1:53.30, respectively, Kailey Turner (500 freestyle, 5:05.96 and 200 butterfly, 2:05.01) and finally Sydney Guidara, who won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events with scores of 294.08 and 325.88, respectively.
"Our team really pulled together today and put up some great performances," UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. "January is a hard month to race in, due to the training cycle of the season, and our athletes looked really strong today. Kicking off the meet with a pool record is truly a testament of the team dynamic and the work ethic of this group. That really got the rest of the squad rolling through the events. Indra Vandenbussche, Kailey Turner, Diana Kolb, and Shaena McCloud getting double wins for the team was huge. And the speed and skill set each of those athletes brought to their events highlights the work they've been putting in with their teammates.
"Kailey Turner was on fire today, and her tenacity and drive led her to two key victories for the team, and outstanding in-season times. She's one of our most consistent athletes within training, and it's fun to see her unleash that work in her events."
Another highlight from the diving competitions from freshman Valeria Hernandez Meza earning her NCAA Zone Cut in the 3-meter springboard with her 280.88, which was good for third place. The freshman marks the fifth UNT diver to achieve a Zone cut this season, which is a new program record. Guidara has made the cut in both springboards and platform, freshman Amelia Sharp has earned her platform cut, Kamryn Wong has a cut score in both springboard events and Mackenzie Ferguson in the 1-meter springboard.
"I'm super proud of the divers today," associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "Great way to kick off the second semester as we near closer to conference. They've been working so hard over winter training and today they got to show off all that hard work. Five divers with personal bests and season bests and capped off with a zone cut by Valeria and a double win by Sydney. I'm excited for the next few weeks to finish off our regular season."
The Mean Green will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Edinburg, Texas, to take on UTRGV, and then they will return home for the final home meet of the season and celebrate Senior Day on Feb. 8, against Little Rock.
