DENTON - UNT junior Sydney Guidara won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events to lead a successful showing for the divers in a 148.5-92.5Â dual-meet loss to American foe Tulane.
Guidara won the 3-meter event with a score of 301.20 ahead of teammate Kamryn Wong's 274.80, while sophomore Amelia Sharp finished fourth to also score points for the Mean Green with a 242.93. The 1-meter saw Guidara win with a 301.95, while Wong (282.00) and Sharp (262.28) finished second and third, respectively.
"I'm super proud of this team," said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "They really stepped up and showed up. They were full of energy, and it truly was a group effort. We had a lot of great performances and progress forward, and I'm excited to keep building on that."
In the pool, a relatively young, inexperienced Mean Green squad also had some success, highlighted by event wins from sophomore Jette Schindler in the 200 butterfly in 2:06.25 and freshman Maria Jose Sanchez Castro in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.75 to edge out the second-place Tulane finisher by one one-hundredth of a second.
"We had some really good races today, and some high notes of team members who are honing in on their skill set this season," head coach Brittany Roth said. "Jette Schindler has been so steady and consistent in training, and she's been taking risks and challenging herself in her 200 Fly work. It was great to see her implementing that work today and getting the team a win in that event. Hollie Smith and Maddie McAlister had great races today, too. I've been impressed with each of them in their racing and building from their experiences. I was impressed with Majo Sanchez Castro in the 200 Breast. She's doing a great job and she brings such a joyful energy to the team. It's fun to see her building her confidence in her racing."
The Mean Green will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Rice for a dual meet against another conference opponent.
