DALLAS - The UNT swimming and diving team competed at its midseason championship last week, from Wednesday to Saturday, at SMU's Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center and turned in several National Invitational Championship cuts and an NCAA Zone cut in diving.
One of the stars of the meet for UNT was freshman Vivian Anderson, who led off the 200 medley relay team (along with Mikaela Goelst, Maria Mitova and Scarlett McCloud), which finished fifth with an NIC A-Cut time of 1:40.60. Anderson also earned an A-Cut time in the 50 backstroke with a 25.30. She also earned three NIC B-Cut times in the 50 freestyle when she led off the 200 freestyle relay with a 23.21 split, the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, when she swam a 54.08, which is the third-fastest time in program history.
The Mean Green also got NIC B-Cut times in the 100 breaststroke with Goelst's 1:02.59 and in the 200 butterfly with Mitova's 2:02.93 and Jette Schindler's 2:03.48.
"We had a solid outing at the SMU Invitational," UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. "We have been working this semester to develop and implement our race planning and skill work needed to hit our ultimate goals. The SMU Invite was a great opportunity to test where we are after 12 weeks of work, and we saw every member of our team swimming the best of the season thus far. We had a lot of great efforts to celebrate through all of our NIC cuts, personal best times, and our athletes having strong Prelim swims to get into some great Finals positions. I'm excited to move into this next phase of training where we can target the next segment of our skill and speed development."
On the diving side, senior Kamryn Wong qualified for NCAA Zones on the 3-meter springboard with a 323.95 to finish third in the event, while junior Sydney Guidara finished seventh with a 301.50 - also a Zone qualifying score, but Guidara had already qualified previously. Now both have qualified for NCAA Zones on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
The Mean Green will be back in action when they host New Mexico State on Dec. 19, at 12 p.m., with swimming at the Pohl Recreation Center and diving at the PEB Natatorium.
