DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team's sophomore guard Je'Shawn Stevenson scored 11 points in overtime and finished with a career high 26 to lead the Mean Green to a 79-71 victory over Eastern Washington at the Super Pit Tuesday night.
North Texas (5-2) needed two big free throws from sophomore forward Reece Robinson with nine seconds remaining in regulation and then a defensive stop to send the game into the five-minute overtime period. In overtime, Stevenson took over as he alone outscored the Eagles (1-6) 11-6.
"A ton of credit to coach (Don) Monson and Eastern Washington," said North Texas head coach Daniyal Robinson. "They gave us everything and were well prepared and executed at a high level. Going into the OT Je'Shawn (Stevenson) was the most excited. He was pumped and it showed with how he performed."
UNT held EWU scoreless for the first three minutes and 15 seconds of overtime. During that time span, North Texas went on a 9-0 run.
Stevenson got the overtime period started by making a putback and-one layup to put his side up three. With two and half minutes remaining in the overtime period Stevenson put the dagger into the Eagles by making a step-back 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock to give the Mean Green a then eight-point advantage.
With Tuesday night's overtime victory, the Mean Green have now won 10 straight home games dating back to last season and have won 13 of their last 15 overtime contests.
Next up for North Texas is another home game as they host Prairie View A&M at the Super Pit Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
