The senior posted the third 30-point, 30-rebound game in Division I since 1981
DENTON, Texas – Megan Nestor posted one of the all-time great games in Division I history, finishing with 34 points and 31 rebounds to lead UNT women's basketball to an 81-52 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday inside The Super Pit.
The senior from St. Lucia set the program record and the American Conference record for rebounds in a game, while posting the first 30-30 game in program history. In addition, it's just the third 30-30 game in Division I history since the 1981-82 season.
"I wasn't satisfied with my rebounding performance in the last few games," Nestor said. "I knew I had to crash and rebound today and that's what I did. I have a motor and I used that today to crash the boards. That's what I do."
Nestor came out of the gate hot collecting nine rebounds in the first quarter. By the end of the first half, she had her fifth double double of the season with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Her pursuit of history didn't stop there as she snatched the program record early in the fourth quarter, passing the previous record of 26 set by Anisha George and Beverly Sampey.
Her 34 points came on an efficient 17-of-22 shooting, while also posting four steals in the game. Nestor's domination came against a Texas Southern team that entered the game as the No. 11 rebounding team in the country with 47.0 rebounds per game. The Lady Tigers only mustered 25 rebounds in the entire game Saturday.
While Nestor was the only player in double figures for the Mean Green, the team shot 45% from the field – their best mark since Nov. 13 against Nelson. Ten UNT players scored in the victory.
With the win, UNT improves to 6-3 on the season ahead of its first road trip out of the state when it faces Illinois on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. CT.
