SEATTLE, Wash. — The UNT track and field program collected a pair of individual titles despite sending a smaller group of athletes to the UW Invite Friday and Saturday in Seattle, Wash.
Derrick Warren had an impressive weekend starting with the 60 meters on Saturday. The transfer from Sam Houston State tied his personal best in the prelims before taking first place in the finals. Later on, he moved over to the long jump where he placed second with a mark of 7.19 meters.
Aariyana Williams was the second Mean Green athlete to claim gold on the day with a personal best time of 54.61 in the 400 meters. Similar to last time out at the Red Raider Invite, Kendhal Tucker and Chinazaekpere Okoye also ran great races placing fifth and seventh, respectively.
In addition to the champions, the Mean Green had a school record broken for the third consecutive meet. Late Friday night, the Mean Green DMR teams set both the men's and women's program records. The men's team consisting of Clarence McGill, Hunter Hendry, Chase Lehr and Joseph Wienen became the first DMR team to break 10 minutes in program history at 9:59.34. On the women's side, Betty Bajika, Williams, Trinity Trotter and London Culbreath combined to clock an 11:47.89.
C'Nai Childress represented the Mean Green well as the lone competitor in the sprint events for the women. She took second in the 60 meters and the 200 meters, while setting a PR in the 60 meter prelims.
The North Texas distance runners also saw success in Seattle, especially in the 3,000 meters. Bajika and Culbreath set personal bests in the event Friday night, which was immediately followed up by Victor Neiva and Connor Bartek also recording the best times of their careers.
The Mean Green had a number of other high finishers and personal bests on the weekend, including freshman thrower Bolaji Subair who improved her best mark in the shot put from 12.82 meters to 13.56 meters.
UNT will return to competition Feb. 14-15 in Lubbock, Texas, for the Jarvis Scott Invite in what will be its final tune-up prior to the American Athletic Conference Championships.
