Meek Named AAC Men's Golf Player of the Week

DENTON - UNT senior Dawson Meek rebounded from an opening-round 78 to close out the Vaqueros Intercollegiate this week with a 67 and a final-round 70 and claimed a T4 finish in the event to open the spring season in Mexico.

That performance, which helped the Mean Green to a third-place finish, earned Meek a nod as the American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. It's the first conference award for Meek and the first for UNT since head coach Luke Calcatera took over the program prior to last season.

Meek totaled 15 birdies in the event, including eight in the second round, and en route to his fourth-place showing beat the Nos. 34 and 48 golfers in the country from 16th-ranked SMU. After the event, he is now the team leader in stroke average with a mark of 72.53 for the season.

Meek and the Mean Green will return to action next week when they travel to Puerto Rico for the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate at Palmas Athletic Club's Flamboyan Course. The event begins Monday and runs through Wednesday.
