DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team won its sixth game in a row as they defeated Wichita State 68-66 Monday night at the Super Pit. The win secures a top three seed for the Mean Green in the 2025 American Athletic Conference Tournament.
North Texas (22-6, 13-3) was led in scoring by senior Atin Wright who scored 21 points and knocked down four 3-pointers in the win. It's his sixth 20-point game in conference.
This is only the fifth time in program history UNT has won 13 league games in a single season.
"I didn't think we played our best but (Wichita State) was a big part of that," UNT head coach Ross Hodge said. "We had great resolve though and made some big plays down the stretch."
The Shockers (17-12, 7-9) were able to stay in the game and get a lead in the second half by forcing 14 Mean Green turnovers, which they scored 16 points off of. But down the stretch North Texas made five of its final six shot attempts to hold off Wichita State who entered Monday having won six of its last seven.
UNT also got a strong offensive game from Brenen Lorient who scored 15 points in just 18 minutes of action. He dealt with foul trouble early in the game. Guard Latrell Jossell added 13 points off the bench as he made first half 3-pointers to steady North Texas as WSU made a comeback.
The Mean Green remain at home as they host Charlotte on Thursday at 8 p.m. for their home finale. A win over the 49ers gives North Texas 15 home wins on the year, which would tie a Super Pit record.
