American Athletic Conference Championship
Southern Hills Golf Club | Brooksville, Fla.
The UNT women's golf team will head to Southern Hills Golf Club for the second time in as many years to take on the American Athletic Conference Championship. The Mean Green are looking to get back on top at the conference level after seeing their streak of three straight conference championships (in Conference USA) end last year in their first year as a member of The American. UNT enters the event as the third seed based on national rankings, after the Mean Green have been the highest ranked AAC team for most of the season.
THE EVENT: Southern Hills will play as a par-72 course at 6,289 yards. The teams will play 18 holes per day, beginning on Monday and will play the final 18 holes during Wednesday's final round. The final round will be broadcast live on ESPN+, beginning at 11 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 11 teams participating in the tournament: Charlotte, No. 61 East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, South Florida, Tulane, No. 64 Tulsa, UAB, No. 67 UNT, UTSA and Wichita State.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Bouquet Subsomboon, Mason Lewis, Malisone Chanthapanya, Kat Anglett and Shreya Pal. Mallorie Luitwieler will be the alternate, which means she can be subbed in freely after the first round.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Scoreboard. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
AKERS SAYS: "I feel good about our preparation over the past few weeks," said head coach Michael Akers. "It is easier to prepare for a course once you have seen it and played it in competition. We are certainly better prepared than we were a year ago. Our regular season schedule has been extremely difficult. We faced Arkansas three times this spring and they were ranked No. 1 in the nation back in the January. We even were paired with them for 36 holes in Houston. That kind of competition makes things easier when you get to conference. We do talk about playing the golf course but it is hard not to notice the players you are paired with.
"We are working every day to improve our mindset. I am educating our newer players about the three championships in a row, and that is our expectation. When you set an expectation for excellence and you achieve that for multiple years it just becomes part of your culture."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over nine years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for four straight NCAA Regionals, which is the longest active streak for an AAC team.
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green will await their NCAA Regional fate as they look for a fifth straight Regional bid.Â
Â
STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
