DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team has signed senior transfer Demarion Watson.
The 6-foot-7 Watson joins the Mean Green after helping lead Iowa State to three straight NCAA Tournaments, including the 2024 Sweet 16 and the 2024 Big 12 Championship. Watson played in 81 games for the Cyclones over the three seasons and was known as a defensive stopper for an ISU team that ranked in the top 15 in the nation in defensive efficiency each year Watson was on the team.
"We are excited to add Demarion Watson to the Mean Green family," said UNT head coach Daniyal Robinson. "D Wat is a high character young man and a very talented basketball player. He is an athletic wing/forward with versatility and the ability to defend multiple positions. He brings a wealth of experience having played in the Big 12 and three NCAA Tournaments. Academically, he made Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and selected Academic All-Big 12 Second Team. We look forward to the impact he will make not only on the basketball court but in the classroom and in the community as well. Please welcome D Wat to the Mean Green Family!"
Watson is a strong rebounder as well as scorer. Last season he had seven boards in a win at Kansas State and four times had five or more rebounds against a Big 12 opponent. Watson's single game scoring career high is a 15-point performance in a win over Oklahoma.
Robinson was on staff at Iowa State from 2015-22. He helped recruit Watson to Iowa State before taking the Cleveland State head coaching job during the summer of 2022. Current UNT assistant coach Mo Ba was on staff at Iowa State during Watson's freshman season.
Coming out of Totino-Grace High School in Minneapolis in 2022, Watson was a top 150 recruit in the nation and the sixth best recruit in Minnesota, per 247Sports. As a senior he led Totino-Grace to its first state title in school history. Watson blocked three shots in the championship game. He was a finalist for the 2022 Minnesota Mr. Basketball Award. In addition to ISU, Watson held offers coming out of high school from Florida, Creighton, Illinois, Iowa, California and Vanderbilt among others.
Watson will join UNT with one year of eligibility remaining.
