Neal Ozmun Hired To UNT Soccer Staff

DENTON — UNT soccer head coach John Hedlund hired veteran coach Neal Ozmun to his staff on Thursday as an assistant coach.
Ozmun comes to North Texas from Idaho where he served on staff for the last two seasons and helped lead the Vandals to back-to-back top two finishes in the Big Sky Conference and the program's first conference tournament championship title in 2023. It was Idaho's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
"We're excited to have Neal on board, he brings a wealth of experience and a strong work ethic that will make an immediate impact to our program," Hedlund said. "Neal's background includes extensive work with goalkeepers and defensive units, as well as expertise in organizing set pieces, analyzing and breaking down game field and scouting reports. Neal is a relentless recruiter and has a great eye for talent and with all of those qualities it makes him a great addition to our Mean Green family."
In his two seasons at Idaho, the Vandals had a combined 24-10-5 overall record and a 10-4-2 combined league record. Idaho reached the Big Sky Tournament title game each year Ozmun was there, winning it all in 2023. Idaho fell just short last year as they tied Sacramento State, 0-0, in the championship match but fell in the shootout, 7-6.
Ozmun helped guide Idaho defender Alyssa Peters to two consecutive Big Sky Defensive MVP honors and goalkeeper Kira Witte to a 2023 Goalkeeper of the Year honor. In total 15 Idaho players earned all-conference honors in Ozmun's two years with the program and 11 Vandals were named to a Big Sky All-Tournament team, including the 2023 Big Sky Tournament MVP Rebekah Reyes.
Ozmun is familiar with the state of Texas as prior to his stint in Idaho he was the associate head coach at Abilene Christian from 2019-22 under ACU's all-time winningest head coach Casey Wilson. With the Wildcats, Ozmun has helped shape the careers of two of the program's all-time greats in net, Rachel Johnson and Erin Smith. Both were named all-conference when they were full-time starters, with Johnson earning the honor in 2019 and Smith reigning in the honor in the 2020-21 season.
Prior to Abilene Christian Ozmun also had stops at Grambling State (2018), Idaho State (2015-17) and Ouachita Baptist (2012-14).
Ozmun is a 2010 graduate of DII Ouachita Baptist where he was a goalkeeper for the Tigers. He was twice named the Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Year. When he graduated from OBU he was the program's career leader in total saves. Ozmun holds a master's degree in sports administration from Henderson State.
