OAKMONT, Pa. - Former Mean Green golf standout Carlos Ortiz is in contention heading into the final day of the 125th U.S. Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club, as he sits alone in fifth place at even-par - four shots back of Sam Burns, who is at 4-under par.
The Guadalajara, Mexico, native and member of the Asian Tour and LIV Golf, fired a 3-under 67 on Saturday, which tied him with Adam Scott for the low round of the day, and leads the field through three days in Greens in Regulation (43 of 54) and strokes gained (5.68). He's also tied for second in the field in total birdies with 12.
Ortiz, who is playing in his fifth career U.S. Open and 10th career major championship, had a bogey-free round going until the 18th and final hole, when he narrowly missed a par putt and settled for a bogey, ending his streak that would've given him just the seventh bogey-free round in the five U.S. Opens to be contested at the famously difficult Oakmont track. His 67 marks the best major championship round of his career.
Ortiz will tee off at 12:53 p.m., on Sunday, and will be paired with fellow LIV golfer Tyrrell Hatton, who is tied for sixth at 1-over. The broadcast begins at 8 a.m. on USA and shifts to NBC at 11 a.m.
