CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The UNT women's golf team had a program-record six players named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar list, which was announced this week.
Seniors Shreya Pal and Malisone Chanthapanya, along with juniors Mason Lewis and Mallorie Luitwieler and sophomores Bouquet Subsomboon and Katharina Anglett were all named to the prestigious list, which has some of the most stringent criteria for selection in all of college athletics with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and a participation threshold of more than half of the team's tournaments from the past season. The previous program record of five was last accomplished last year.
"I am extremely proud to have six student-athletes named Academic All-Americans," head coach Michael Akers said. "What the ladies achieved in the classroom this year was mind boggling. When I opened the final grade report in May I nearly fell over.
"The life of a DI student-athlete requires a tremendous amount of time management. Our team excels on the golf course, and this year they took academics to another level. I recruit players that want to play professional golf but I tell everyone of them that at any time you could be injured and never play golf again. Their education is important so they should work hard in the classroom and on the golf course."
The team finished just outside the NCAA bubble in the spring but extended its postseason streak to five years with a bid to the Golfweek National Golf Invitational, where the Mean Green finished third. The program also had several players recognized on the All-AAC team, as Chanthapanya, Lewis and Subsomboon were all named to the team - the second-most representatives of any team in the league after champion Tulsa.
