DENTON - The UNT women's golf program has a new assistant coach, as head coach Michael Akers announced the hiring of Marcus Willey on Friday.
Willey joins the Mean Green after spending the past two seasons as the men's and women's head coach at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, where he was named the KCAC Women's Coach of the Year this past season and coached three all-conference players in his two seasons at the helm.
A native of Abilene, Kansas, Willey played collegiately at Fort Hays State in Hays, Kansas, which is also Akers' alma mater and was his first coaching stop. Willey finished his playing career in 2021. After his playing career, he served for two seasons at Fort Hays State as a graduate assistant coach.
"I'm very excited to add Marcus to our coaching staff," Akers said. "The top priority with this hire was to get a coach with a similar personality to most of our players. I like to recruit calm players that keep their emotions in check during competition. Golf takes such a long time to play that getting upset or too excited typically doesn't help over the long haul. Marcus also has a very good work ethic. I have trust that he will be an instant asset to our program and help us get back to the NCAA postseason."
