RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UNT junior-to-be Sydney Guidara was crowned a national champion two times over earlier this week when she won the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events in the AAU College/Senior Open.
Guidara, who is entering her junior season after a stellar first two years with the Mean Green, won the 1-meter event with a score of 287.00 and the 3-meter with a 272.70 in the open event with athletes from across the country. Rising junior Ashley Van Milligan and rising senior Gabi Somoza also competed in the event. Van Milligan finished fifth in the 3-meter, while Somoza finished 11th. They finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 1-meter.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity with AAU National Championships to allow some of our divers to compete this summer," UNT associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "It was an awesome chance to keep our skills sharp and gain experience for the upcoming season. Sydney, Ashley and Gabi did a great job this past week competing in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events against some great competition with all three divers making finals.
"I'm extremely proud of Sydney for her accomplishments winning both events; something that she has worked very hard for as she continues to seek out opportunities to learn and get better and represent the Mean Green. Sydney previously competed at the USA spring nationals in May, finishing 10th on 1-meter and making the semifinal on 3-meter. With the win this week at AAU's, she will get the opportunity to compete with AAU internationally in some upcoming meets, as well."
