9/13/2025 6:43:00 PM | Football
The Mean Green improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2018 season, when they started 4-0, after racing out to a 42-3 halftime lead on the Cougars thanks to five first-half turnovers - three interceptions and two fumbles - that put UNT's offense in advantageous field position time and time again.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Drew Mestemaker continued his fantastic start to the season, completing 24 of 29 pass attempts for 211 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in just his fourth career start. He has yet to throw an interception this season. Meanwhile, his defensive teammates got three on Saturday and two of them set up easy scoring drives for the Mean Green.
Evan Jackson's 60-yard interception return to end Washington State's opening drive after UNT took a 7-0 lead gave the Mean Green the ball on the Cougars' 12-yard line. That set up the first of two one-play scoring drives for the Mean Green as Jayden Becks scored on a 12-yard touchdown run to put UNT up 14-0 midway through the first quarter. A Zhaiylen Scott fumble recovery on the Washington State 19-yard line midway through the second quarter set off an avalanche of scoring for the Mean Green that put the game away before the break.
For the second time, UNT started a drive in the red zone and scored on three plays, culminating with a Mestemaker 2-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Young Jr., to give the Mean Green a 21-3 lead. Three minutes later, UNT was in the end zone again after a partially blocked punt gave the Mean Green the ball at the Washington State 30-yard line, and the Mean Green needed six plays to go up 28-3 with 5:03 to play in the half.
The Mean Green found the end zone two more times in the half, thanks to a Shane Whitter 43-yard interception return to the Cougars 12-yard line that quickly turned in another one-play scoring drive - a 12-yard Mestemaker touchdown pass to Landon Sides. Forty-five seconds later, the Mean Green were back in the end zone after a 14-yard touchdown run from Becks gave the Mean Green the 42-3 halftime lead following a fumble recovery by Trey Fields at the Cougars' 20-yard line.
By the time the dust settled, the Mean Green had scored 28 unanswered points over the final 7:07 of the first half and 21 points over the final 3:24 of the first half.
The Mean Green will now look to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2018 when they open American play next Saturday at 11 a.m., against defending conference champion Army at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York.
