SAN ANTONIO – The UNT soccer team fell to UTSA, 1-0, on Thursday night in the American opener.
The Mean Green (4-6-1, 0-1-0), who entered the match ranked 10th nationally in shots per game, managed a season-low two shots on the night and only one on net in the final seconds. UTSA (6-2-2, 2-0-0) had 13 shots on the night and tested UNT goalkeeper Alina Arneth throughout the night. The junior from Germany was up to the challenge throughout the night but was beaten for the only time on the night in the 82nd minute from about 25 yards out.
Arneth made five saves on the night, which tied her career high.
The game ended in a UNT offensive flurry with a chaotic scrum in front of the Roadrunners' net but UTSA keeper Jasmine Kessler was able to make her only save on the night to preserve the victory.
"I'm sick to my stomach because the girls played their hearts out, and we deserved at least a point tonight," head coach John Hedlund said. "Once again, I'm proud of our grit and work rate. All we can do is learn from this game move on and get ready for two home games next week. Again, I'm proud of our team's fight tonight."
The Mean Green will next be in action on Thursday, when they return home after four straight road matches to host Charlotte (4-4-0, 0-1-0) at 7 p.m.
