MIAMI – Mean Green volleyball defeated Stetson 3-1 (28-26, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) to close the 305 Challenge at Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday.
"We had a good win for our team coming off a pair of tough matches against quality opponents yesterday," head coach Dave Fleming said. "This weekend gave us a lot of great information on what steps are needed to compete at a higher level as we progress through the season."
UNT (4-2) were led by Reagan Bedell with a career-high 26 kills while fellow outside hitter Jahniya Jackson added 15 of her own, setting a new season-best mark. The Mean Green dropped nine aces on the Hatters (1-5) as it set a new season high from the service line.
Fleming complimented Bedell and Jackson along with backrow play from freshmen Dakota Mitchell and Alessandra Romo as the pair shined in the serve-receive game.
In the first set, North Texas posted its highest single-set score of the season with 28 points after it staved off two set points. Two of the final three points were scored on kills from setter Alexa Washington and Jackson before an attack error by the Hatters sealed the set.
The Mean Green took the second in wire-to-wire fashion before it dropped the third set, 25-23. Bedell shined in the fourth as she collected 11 kills on 16 attacks with zero errors for a .688 hitting percentage in the frame. Mitchell closed the match with her third ace of the match to set a new career high.
North Texas opens its home slate on Friday at 7 p.m. versus Little Rock on day one of the co-hosted UNT-UTA Invitational at the UNT Volleyball Center. The Trojans face Northwestern State at noon to begin the four-team tournament before UT Arlington meets the Demons at 5 p.m. Fans can purchase a day pass, good for all three of Friday's matches, HERE.
