Men's Basketball Travels To Wichita State Sunday
1/9/2026 9:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WICHITA, Kansas — The UNT men's basketball team travels to The Roundhouse Sunday afternoon to take on one of the nation's top rebounding teams in Wichita State in a mid-day clash.
The Mean Green (10-6, 1-2 American) and Shockers (9-7, 1-2 American) are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. CT from Charles Koch Arena. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on KHYI 95.3 FM and on ESPNU.
Sunday will be 42nd all-time meeting between these two programs who from 1957-75 were in the Missouri Valley Conference together. UNT enters Sunday having won four in a row over WSU, including three-straight wins on the road. In the series' nearly 70-year history, the Mean Green have never won five in a row over the Shockers.
Wichita State is North Texas' 15th most common opponent ever.
North Texas will be challenged on Sunday with limiting the Shockers' second-chance opportunities. WSU averages more than 15 offensive rebounds per game, which ranks sixth in the nation. The Mean Green, though, feature one of the nation's top defenses as they limit their opponents to just 64.1 points per game. UNT's defense has forced four of its last five opponents into season high turnovers. Last Sunday against Tulsa, the Mean Green fell one turnover shy of forcing the Golden Hurricane into a season high number of turnovers. In its three league games so far this year, UNT has forced its opponents into 50 total turnovers. That's 15 more than the next most (Temple and UAB).
Following Sunday's game UNT will have a week off before they travel to New Orleans and face Tulane on Jan. 18 for another linear ESPN broadcast.
Highest AP Top 25 Win Ever
North Texas' highest ranked AP Top 25 victory ever came on Jan. 25, 1963, at then No. 8 Wichita State in The Roundhouse. UNT won 69-67 over the top 10 nationally ranked Shockers and was led in scoring by Dave Burns who finished with 23 points. UNT was the only team that season to beat Wichita State in its home arena. WSU beat both No. 1 Cincinnati and No. 2 Ohio State in the Roundhouse that year.
Seven 20-Point Games
Je'Shawn Stevenson recorded his seventh 20-point game of the year on Wednesday versus South Florida as he finished with 21 points. Stevenson's seven 20-point games so far this year ranks second among American Conference players. East Carolina's Jordan Riley has had eight 20-point games so far this season as of Friday. Stevenson enters Sunday having scored 20+ points in three consecutive games. Three consecutive 20-point games has been done a lot by Mean Green players in recent years, however, the last UNT player to score 20+ points in four consecutive games was Jeremy Combs who in January of 2016 had four straight 20-point games all against conference opponents.
Record Breaking Semester
This past fall the UNT men's basketball team set the program record for highest single team semester GPA in program history with a 3.711 team GPA. Every player on the team had a 3.0+ GPA and five players boasted a 4.0 GPA.
