Mean Green Drop Game at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNT soccer team went toe-to-toe with one of the hottest teams in the American Conference for a half on Thursday night, but not long into the second half, the Blazers broke through on their way to a 3-0 win.
The Mean Green (4-5-3, 0-2-2) controlled the game in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net as the teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime. Once the game resumed, it didn't take long for the Blazers (6-5-1, 3-1-0), who have now won five of their last six matches, to take control.
UAB's Avery Berryman opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and then assisted on two Lailah Stewart goals in the 58th and 65th minutes to round out the scoring.
UNT had its chances, as the Mean Green outshot UAB 11-10 and had a handful of great looks, including an Emma King rocket from the edge of the 18-yard box that hit the crossbar. Junior Claire Niedermeier, who leads the team with nine goals, also had a pair of point-blank looks that were saved by UAB goalkeeper Macie Murphy, who finished the night with five saves.
"While the first half was evenly matched, the second half came down to finishing," head coach John Hedlund said. "They capitalized on their chances by finding the corners, whereas we put our efforts right at their goalkeeper. We're creating the chances in front of goal; now it's all about shot placement and execution."
UNT will now take the weekend off before it returns home to face Florida Atlantic on October 8 at 7 p.m.
