GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNT senior Kamryn Wong battled with eventual champion Frida Zuniga Guzman, of East Carolina, before falling just shy as both divers broke the old Championship record set by Zuniga in 2024, and Wong claimed the silver medal in the 3-meter springboard at the American Conference Championship on Friday with a program-record score of 354.90. UNT junior Sydney Guidara took home the bronze medal in the event with a 315.85.
Sophomores Amelia Sharp and Valeria Hernandez Meza scored points as C-finalists in the event, as the Mean Green's strong diving performance continued with the two more medals to bring their total to five so far in the meet, including the Team Diving gold medal on Wednesday.
"We had a great start to the day going 1-2 in prelims with Kam and Syd, and both of them actually increased their scores in finals — Kam finishing second with a new school record and Syd right behind her in third," said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan. "That shows their competitiveness and ability to respond under pressure. We had strong efforts across the board, including Amelia and Val scoring in the C-Final. At this point in the week, you're managing a lot — yesterday was a long day, and 3-meter is a demanding event where the dives are bigger and the margin for error is small. It truly can become anyone's contest. I'm proud of the way this team kept fighting through some fatigue and stayed mentally engaged.
"This sport — and this week — is as much mental as it is physical, and I'm really proud of how they've continued to rise to that challenge. We're looking forward to one more opportunity on tower tomorrow and making the most of the final time this group of seven competes together."
In the pool, the Mean Green had a pair of fourth-place showings in B-Finals from freshman Vivian Anderson in the 100 backstroke and sophomore Jette Schindler in the 200 butterfly. Sophomore Maria Mitova finished sixth in the 200 butterfly C-Final and freshman Maria Jose Sanchez Castro took second in the 100 breaststroke C-Final, where sophomore Mikaela Goelst finshed seventh.
Competition will conclude on Saturday with the broadcast on ESPN+.
